A friend and I were discussing video gaming the other night and had an idea(it will never happen but still. ).

With games such as FIFA, Football Manager, Madden, NHL and other games that have annual releases, we came to the conclusion that instead of having yearly releases that are consistently full of bugs, over priced and with very little change, there should be a new release every 5 years.

During this 5 year period, there would be annual premium updates instead of new releases. So at the end of the year, you will get a notifcation in game asking if you wish to update to the new game at a cost of say £14.99. This update would include player transfers, stadium changes, team kit changes, relegation and promotion changes, all the stuff you would expect from a new game, but as an update to the original release.

Then after 5 years, when they have maxed out the game engine and explored every possibility they can with it, they release a new game with an updated engine to keep it looking fresh and modern.

The reason we thought this would be a good idea, is simple.
Each FIFA release hardly changes, if you go from FIFA 12 to FIFA 17, there are a lot of differences, but if you play the ones inbetween, you don't see the differences as much. Each release is full of bugs too, which some are game breaking and others are just funny, but they don't need to be there. The only reason they are there is because they only have 8 months to make a fully functional new game, that's no time at all when you consider the likes of Ashes of a Singularity, which is strictly online(as far as I remember) has taken 4 years to get to the Early Access Beta.
They have no time to fix bugs, they have no time to fully implement the idea's that they have, as you've probably noticed the half arsed attempts at new game modes, such as The Journey(yay for 6 games and finished).

Game development needs time and patience, Publishers don't seem to understand this.

This sounds all good and promising hsf but these publishers have overlords to answer too. Who only care about how much dosh they can make, and as long as people keep buying the same game every year. Publishers will release buggy games every year.
